Title: Israel at 65: an optimistic view on past and future life with immanent unsolvable problems Prof. Elisha Haas June 6, 2013 Synopsis: The renewed Jewish sovereignty in the old homeland is both contradictory to the normal development of world history and contradictory to the basic theology of the major religions. As such this unprecedented miracle is the source of the war against the Jewish homeland. This war has many manifestations and will probably never disappear. The European states do whatever they can to support the struggle against Israel and the original Christian anti-Semitism was converted to anti-Zionism/anti-Israel. In the whole Middle East the political structures that were imposed by the colonialists collapsed and the tribal system returned with strong Jihadist approach to the West and to the Jewish state. The Palestinians are not the key issue here; it is the Jihad of Islam against the West and the Jewish sovereignty in the holy land that is the main conflict. El Qaeda and Iran, two different versions of Islam are united in this Jihad. When they say that they are going to wipe Israel out, they mean it. Israel should prepare for the Jihadist war and prepare for the situation where it is fighting alone, without any support, as was the case in the past. Israel has only one real ally, the Jewish people worldwide. The peace treaties with Egypt and Jordan are short term and we should remember that these are only "hudnas" (i.e. peace treaties that Muslims respect only when they cannot overcome the enemy), both states are preparing for the war with a lot of American equipment. The two state solution to the side conflict with the Palestinians cannot work, it is advocated only by those who do not understand the problems or those who want the Jewish soverignty to disappear. It will eventually work, but only when the "Arab Spring" will destroy the current regime in Jordan and it will become the homeland for the Arabs of Eretz Israel, which is not a matter of far future. Yet, the main danger to Israel's future is the internal conflict between those who hope for "normalization" and those who favor the attempts to develop the "Jewish identity" of the Jewish homeland. This internal conflict shaped Israel's short history internally and externally. Ben Guriion believed that within one generation there will be no single Shomer-Shabbat Jew in Israel. A typical representative of the second "cultural" generation of the secular Zionism is the retired supreme court president, prof. Aron Barak, who led the process of converting Israel to a "civil state". This is essentially the Israeli version of the process of assimilation in other Jewish communities. This process is about to be halted. The next generation of so called "secular" Israelis is starting to search and adopt the Jewish identity and the internal cultural conflict will not last very long. The underground currents of search for the Jewish identity and Jewish tradition by those who were educated to be "normal" are already visible and growing every day. At the age of 65 we can see hints that the internal conflicts approach a settlement, and that is the main key for a secure future. Despite all the external and internal storms, despite the future of struggles and wars, Israel is a stable successful state. It is strong economically and militarily. It is the only piece of land in the Middle East where an American president can have trustful and stable ally. Israel can survive every threat if, and only if, the Jews of Israel would adhere to their Jewish identity and consider it worth the sacrifices.
